Speaker to visit Japan

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will go to Japan on a five-day tour at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Her Personal Secretary Kamal Billah said the speaker would depart for Japan on Thursday night.

Japanese Ambassador Shiro Sadoshima handed over the invitation to Shirin on May 20.

The speaker will be attending the 'World Assembly for Women Tokyo 2014: Towards A Society Where Women Shine' to be held from Sept 12-14 in the Japanese capital.

"The Japanese government wants the speaker there as an expert on women's empowerment. Japan wants to apply Bangladesh's model of women's empowerment in their society," Kamal Billah said.
Shirin will meet the Japanese prime minister and the two speakers of Japan's bicameral legislature. She will return on Sept 16.
