Indo-Bangla home secy-level talks start Tuesday

The home secretary-level talks between Bangladesh and India will begin on Tuesday with the meeting of the Joint Working Group in Dhaka.

Additional Secretary Kamal Uddin Ahmed will lead the Bangladesh side while Joint Secretary Shambhu Singh will lead India in the daylong meeting, the 14th of its kind.

The home ministry in a statement said the 15th secretary-level talks would be held on the next day.

Senior Secretary Md Mozammel Haque Khan and his Indian counterpart Anil Goswami will lead the 13-strong sides.

This will be the first home secretary-level meeting between the two neighbours after the change of India’s leadership in May.

Stopping cross-border smuggling, illegal trespassing, lessening border tension, complicacies in border demarcation, and fake currency would dominate the talks, the home ministry said.

It believes the talks will contribute “significantly to protect bilateral interest and ease border tensions”.

The Indian home secretary will visit Bangladesh Police Academy at Sardah in Rajshahi on Sep 4.
