The traders were returning to their neighbourhood after buying vegetables from the wholesale market in Manikganj’s Jaagir.
Jamuna water was flowing 36 cm above the danger-mark on Friday morning, Jamalpur Water Development Board Executive Engineer Naba Kumar Chowdhury said.
Residents of 25 Union Parishads under Islampur, Dewanganj, Melandah, Madarganj, and Sharishabarhi Upazilas are stuck in their villages as the Jamuna continues to rise.
They are suffering from an acute shortage of food and drinking water. The government's relief efforts are inadequate, locals say.
Low-lying areas in these localities, including a number of schools, have gone under water.
To add to the sufferings, standing crops on 9,787 hectors have been damaged, said Jamalpur's Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Abdus Samad Azad.
