Five to hang for 2006 murder of a man

A Dhaka court has sentenced five men to death for the murder of a man at in Gopalganj in 2006.

Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal 3 announced the verdict on Thursday.
Six other accused were acquitted by the court.
The five convicts are: Lelin Sikdar, Monir Hossain, Awapan Molla alias Dalim, Obaidul Sheikh and Tapan Kazi.
Monir and Swapan are absconding.
State counsel Mahbubur Rahman said the convicts killed one Shipon Kazi, of Muksudpur, on the night of July 30, 2006 with sharp weapons.
Shipon Kazi lived with his uncle in Muksudpur.
Monir, Obaidul and Dalim owed him money, but rather than paying him back, the trio, together with the other convicts, killed him and dumped the body in the Ujani canal.
The body was found the next day.
Shipon’s mother filed a case the same day at the Muksudpur Police Station. Police later submitted charges against 11 people.
Fourteen people testified for the prosecution in this case.
