Local journalist Jalal Uddin said the boat was crossing the river at Daulatpur.

"It sank at around 3pm due to strong current and rough wind," he said.

The missing, belonging to various Daulatpur villages, are mostly children and women.

Daulatpur UNO Muktar Hossain said locals rescued six passengers but at least 15 others were yet to be accounted for.

Two fire service teams were carrying on rescue operations.

Of those rescued, only boatman Sentu Mia and passenger 'Selim' could be identified. They have been admitted to a local health complex.

Sentu said his motorised fishing boat was carrying at least 22 passengers to an island in the Padma River from Bairagir Char.

He said the boat capsized because of strong current and rough winds.
