Adflame director, 2 others get 10 yrs for adulterated drugs

A Dhaka Court has found Adflame Pharmaceuticals guilty of manufacturing adulterated drugs.

The Drug Court of Dhaka gave the verdict on Tuesday in a case filed 21 years ago.
It sentenced the company’s director Dr Helena Pasha, manager Mizanur Rahman and quality control officer Nrigendra Nath Bala to 10 years in jail. Each of them has also been fined Tk 250,000 each.
Public Prosecutor Shaheen Ahmed Khan said that the company’s owner Azfar Pasha and quality-control officer Md Noman were acquitted on grounds of insufficient evidence.
Mizanur Rahman and Helena Pasha were at the court when the verdict was pronounced, he said.
The case was filed on Jan 2, 1993 after toxic chemicals were found in a Paracetamol syrup manufactured by the company.
Many children were admitted to the hospital with kidney disease after taking the drug.
At least 76 of them died later, the case details indicated.
