Ex-BCL leader Shamim injured in firing

Miscreants have fired at former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) President AKM Enamul Haque Shamim in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi, police say.

The attack took place around 9:45am on Thursday, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ramna Zone Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hossain said.

Shamim was rushed to the Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital with injuries, he said.

From there he was shifted to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, former BCL leader Majharul Islam Manik said.

Shamim, a member of Awami League’s central committee, lives in Dhanmondi-10.

Shamim was shot in the left hand, his car driver Md Kamal said.
“He was heading for his Siddheswari office in the morning. As the car reached Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhanmondi, somebody fired at him and he was hit on the left hand,” the driver said.
The driver said it was not clear who attacked Shamim.
Shamim served as BCL president from 1994 to 1998. He was also a BCL leader of Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit.
Hailing from Shariatpur, Shamim was vice president of JU Central Students’ Union from 1989 to 1991.
