Cabinet clears labour law changes

The cabinet on Monday cleared amendments to the Labour Act draft making ‘Group Insurance’ mandatory for workers in industries.

The law will be applicable for any institutions employing a minimum of 100 workers.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the cabinet meeting that cleared the amended Bangladesh Labour Act , 2013.

Factory owners will pay workers’ insurance premium on his own initiative, Cabinet Secretary Muhammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan said. If, a worker dies, then his/her spouse’s claim will be collected by the owners and passed on.

This law also includes processing of insurance claims within 90 days, he said.
