12 fishermen identified

Twelve of the 18 dead fishermen, whose bodies were recovered from west of Kutubdia island of Cox’s Bazar, have been identified on Wednesday.

They were all from Banshkhali Upazila’s Shekharkhil Union of Chittagong.

Kutubdia Police Station Officer in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad said relatives identified the bodies after they were brought to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital around 6:00am.

On Tuesday night, Bangladesh Navy handed over 18 bodies to Kutubdia police.

Earlier, local fishermen recovered three bodies on Monday evening. The bodies were buried in Banshkhali.

The dead were identified Jahangir Alam, 35, son of Sirajul Haque, Mohammad Khalil, 20, son of Abu Taher, Abdur Rahim, 15, son of Abu Siddique, Abdul Nur, 20, son of Badiul Alam, Nurul Islam, 44, son of Abu Ejahar Mia, Delwar Hossain, 24, son of Habibur Rahman, Mizanur Rahman, 18, son of Zafar Ahmed, Fakhrul Anwar, 25, son of Ahmed Sofa, Saker Ullah, 40, son of Hassan Ali, Rafiqul Islam, 23, son of Farid Ahmed, Abdul Alam, 18, son of Kabir Ahmed, and Mohammad Shakir, 25, son of Ejahar Mia.

The 18 bodies will be sent to Banshkhali after autopsy, Cox’s Bazar Assistant Police Superintendent Chhatradhar Tripura told bdnews24.com. “We hope the unidentified bodies will be acknowledged in Banshkhali.”

Rabiul Alam, brother of dead Jahangir Alam, quoting surviving oarsman Nur Hossain, claimed pirates had attacked and hacked at the fishermen in their trawler.

Relatives say the fishermen were killed as they recognised the pirates. They called upon authorities to take quick actions on the matter.

Meanwhile, Shahab Uddin – brother of a dead fisherman – filed a murder case with Kutubdia police on Tuesday.

On Mar 25, three fishing boats Allahr Dan, Al Makkah Fishing and Allah Malik were attacked by the pirates and the fishermen were abducted.

Locals claimed the boats had 38 fishermen. Three of them returned in injured condition. Then the bodies started surfacing at sea.

Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard started conducting special raids against pirates after bodies of the fishermen were recovered.
