It was around 3pm when police were informed about a bomb-like object lying abandoned on the footpath in front of the hotel.

Detective Police’s Assistant Commissioner (Bomb Disposal Unit) Sanowar Hossain said they assumed the grenade was live.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam confirmed bdnews24.com, “Yes, it is a grenade.”

He said it was not possible to remove it from the footpath. “We are trying to defuse it there itself.”

The discovery came amid reports of crude bomb explosions elsewhere in the city immediately after Sayedee was sentenced to death.

Police fired blank shots in Chittagong to disperse Jamaat-Shibir activists trying to assemble following the verdict.
