Russian foreign ministry calls for halt to escalation over Iran
Russia's foreign ministry issued a new call on Monday for a halt to the "escalation of armed conflict" and "provocative actions" in the conflict pitting Iran against the United States and Israel.
"We once again call for a halt to the unleashing of armed escalation and an end to provocative actions and rhetoric," the ministry said in a statement on Telegram. "Today, more than ever, it is vital to return to political and diplomatic efforts and compliance with international law."
The statement also called for an immediate end to the "unprovoked aggression of the US and Israel against Iran, open attempts at regime change and encroachment on the sovereignty of nations."

Senior US national security aides convened in the White House Situation Room after news that Iran had launched missiles at the US base in Qatar.
"The White House and the Department of Defense are aware of, and closely monitoring, potential threats to Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar," a senior White House official said.
White House officials were keeping an eye on TV monitors as cable news channels reported on the Iranian attacks, and they seemed to be taking the news in stride.

Iran fires missiles at US airbase in Qatar
Iran's military said on Monday it had carried out a "devastating and powerful" missile attack on the Al Udeid US airbase in Qatar, after explosions were heard across the Qatari capital following Tehran's threat to retaliate for US airstrikes.
Iran had issued threats to retaliate against the United States after US bombers dropped 30,000-pound bunker-busters on Iranian underground nuclear sites at the weekend, joining Israel's air war against Tehran, and President Donald Trump mooted the possibility of the Iranian government being toppled.
Qatar's defence minister, quoted by Al Jazeera TV, said its air defences had intercepted missiles directed at the Al Udeid airbase, the largest US military installation in the Middle East, situated across the Gulf from Iran.
Qatari authorities said there were no casualties in the attack, which it condemned and said it reserved the right to respond.

UN Security Council meets on Iran as Russia, China push for ceasefire
The UN Security Council met on Sunday to discuss US strikes on Iran's nuclear sites as Russia, China and Pakistan proposed the 15-member body adopt a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Middle East.
It was not immediately clear when it could be put to a vote. The three countries circulated the draft text, said diplomats, and asked members to share their comments by Monday evening. A resolution needs at least nine votes in favour and no vetoes by the United States, France, Britain, Russia or China to pass.
The US is likely to oppose the draft resolution, seen by Reuters, which also condemns attacks on Iran's nuclear sites and facilities. The text does not name the United States or Israel.

Pakistan condemns Trump's bombing of Iran
Pakistan condemned on Sunday the strikes ordered on its neighbour Iran by Donald Trump, a day after Islamabad had said it would nominate the US President for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Pakistan on Sunday said Trump's decision to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities violated international law and that diplomacy was the only way to resolve the Iran crisis.
“The unprecedented escalation of tension and violence, owing to ongoing aggression against Iran, is deeply disturbing. Any further escalation of tensions will have severely damaging implications for the region and beyond,” Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
Also on Sunday, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif telephoned Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and “conveyed Pakistan’s condemnation of the US attacks," a statement from the Pakistani leader said.

Iran's Supreme National Security Council must make the final decision on whether to close the Strait of Hormuz following US bombing raids, Iran's Press TV said after parliament was reported to have backed the measure.

Gulf states on high alert after US strikes on Iran
Gulf states, home to multiple US military bases, were on high alert on Sunday after US strikes on Iran raised the possibility of a widening conflict in the region.
Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, was on a high-security alert after the US strikes, two sources with knowledge of the matter told Reuters on Sunday, while Bahrain urged drivers to avoid main roads.
Kuwait, another key oil exporter in the region, said its defence council would remain in permanent session, according to the state news agency on Sunday, and set up shelters in a ministries complex.
Tehran has previously warned that if it were attacked by the United States, it could target American assets in the region, including US military bases.
Bahrain is home to the headquarters of the US Navy's 5th Fleet and there are US bases in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, as well as in neighbouring Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
Nuclear authorities in Saudi Arabia and the UAE said they had not detected signs of nuclear contamination following the strikes in Iran.

US strikes against Iran not aimed at regime change: Pentagon
The US military's strikes on Iran's nuclear sites were not a preamble to plans for regime change, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said on Sunday, adding that private messages had been sent to Tehran encouraging them to negotiate.
Still, Hegseth warned Iran against following through with past threats of retaliation against the United States, and said US forces were postured to defend themselves, and take action if needed.
"This mission was not and has not been about regime change," Hegseth told a reporters at the Pentagon. "The president authorized a precision operation to neutralize the threats to our national interests posed by the Iranian nuclear program."
The US strikes included 14 bunker-buster bombs, more than two dozen Tomahawk missiles and over 125 military aircraft, in an operation the top US general, General Dan Caine, said was named "Operation Midnight."

Tel Aviv shares hit record highs after US strikes Iran nuclear sites
Israeli stocks rose for a sixth session on Sunday to hit fresh all-time highs after US attacks on Iran's nuclear sites, which investors believe would likely prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons anytime soon.
The broad Tel Aviv 125 index was 1.3 percent higher, while the blue-chip TA-35 was 1.2 percent higher in afternoon trading.
On the heels of Israeli strikes in Iran, shares rose during all five sessions last week, gaining some 6 percent, as Israel hit Iranian nuclear and military targets prior to Saturday's surprise US attacks.

US military strikes overnight in which President Donald Trump said Iran's main nuclear sites were "obliterated" will put to the test the widely held view that such attacks can delay a nuclear programme but not kill a determined push for atom bombs.
As Iran's nuclear programme has expanded and become more sophisticated over the past two decades, many officials and nuclear experts have warned: You can destroy or disable a nuclear programme's physical infrastructure but it is very hard or impossible to eliminate the knowledge a country has acquired.
Western powers including the United States have publicly suggested as much, complaining of the "irreversible knowledge gain" Iran has made by carrying out activities they object to.

A senior Russian official said on Sunday that U.S. President Donald Trump had started a new war byattacking Iran that would only strengthen Tehran's leaders by consolidating society around Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
The Kremlin, which has a strategic partnership with Iran and also maintains close links to Israel, had repeatedly cautioned Washington that US strikes on Iran would plunge the entire region into the "abyss".

Israel faced a missile attack on Sunday as Iran said it reserved all options to defend itself after unprecedented US strikes that President Donald Trump said had "obliterated" its key nuclear facilities.
Hours after Trump dramatically escalated Middle East tensions by sending B-2 bombers to Iran, the Israeli military warned people to seek cover from a barrage that appeared heavier than the Iranian salvoes fired in the past few days.

US Congress members split over attack on Iran
Republican and Democratic members of the US Congress delivered swift reactions to US bombings of Iranian nuclear facilities early on Sunday.
Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Roger Wicker, a Mississippi Republican, applauded the operation but cautioned that the United States now faced "very serious choices ahead."
Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Jim Risch, Republican of Idaho, said, “This war is Israel’s war, not our war, but Israel is one of our strongest allies and is disarming Iran for the good of the world." Risch added, "This is not the start of a forever war. There will not be American boots on the ground in Iran."
"This is not constitutional," conservative Republican Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky said on social media. He was referring to the power of Congress to declare war on foreign countries.
US House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican of Louisiana, said, "The president gave Iran’s leader every opportunity to make a deal, but Iran refused to commit to a nuclear disarmament agreement."

US forces bomb Iran nuclear sites, Trump says Fordow gone
US forces struck three Iranian nuclear sites in a "very successful attack," President Donald Trump said on Saturday, adding that the crown jewel of Tehran's nuclear programme, Fordow, is gone.
After days of deliberation and two weeks before his self-imposed deadline, Trump's decision to join Israel's military campaign against its major rival Iran represents a major escalation of the conflict.
"This was an amazing success tonight," Trump told Reuters in a telephone interview. "They should make peace immediately or they'll get hit again."
He had earlier posted on Truth Social that all US planes were safely on their way home, and he congratulated "our great American Warriors."
