UK MP Nigel Farage has compared a group of masked Muslim demonstrators in east London with a “foreign invading army”, reports the Daily Mail.
The Reform UK leader criticised footage showing men dressed in black with balaclavas or face coverings, walking through the borough of Tower Hamlets while chanting in Arabic and carrying Bangladesh and Palestine flags.
According to the Daily Mail, the gathering took place after police blocked a planned march by the far-right UK Independence Party (UKIP) that had pledged to “reclaim” the area.
Farage described Saturday’s scenes as “one of the most terrifying things I’ve ever seen in my life”.
During the Whitechapel protest, one speaker used a microphone to tell the crowd they would “stand firm” in protecting their community.
“They came specifically targeting Islam,” the speaker said about the UKIP’s march.
“They said, ‘we are coming on a crusade’, they said, ‘we need to take back our streets’.”
“We stand firm to let them know if you come, we will stand firm and will be ready to defend our elders, to defend our women, to defend our community,” he added.
Justifying their counter-protests, the speaker said: “We have never once said we were going on crusades or going into your areas to cause you problems.”
“You are coming into our homes and you want to cause us problems. What is wrong with us standing up? Today is a day we unite.”
Ahead of the march, a local organiser was seen selling balaclavas for £5 while urging supporters to hide their identities, said the Daily Mail.
“No face no case,” he said, encouraging people to buy early before stocks run out.
At a press briefing on Tuesday, Farage was also pressed about comments from Reform UK MP Sarah Pochin, who had complained about the prominence of Black and Asian actors in UK advertisements.
Farage called her language “wrong”, “ugly” and “phrased poorly”, but refused to label it as “racist”.
Pochin later apologised for her remarks, reports the Daily Mail.
