Iran demands FIFA guarantee over IRGC ‘insults’ at WC

Iran’s football federation chief Mehdi Taj has called on FIFA to guarantee that Iranian institutions, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), will not be “insulted” during the World Cup in the United States.

He said Iran expects protection for its national symbols while participating in the tournament, adding that the country’s delegation answers to FIFA, not the US administration.

Taj’s comments follow an incident in which an Iranian football delegation was turned back from entering Canada, with officials later citing visa cancellation linked to IRGC affiliations.

The IRGC is designated a “terrorist organisation” by both Canada and the United States.

Most Israelis oppose ending Iran war now, survey suggests

A majority of Israelis believe ending the war with Iran under current conditions would not serve national security interests, according to a survey by the Israel Democracy Institute.

The think tank found that 59 percent of Israelis oppose ending the war at this stage, while two-thirds of Jewish respondents said it would be only slightly or not at all compatible with security needs.

The survey also suggests 62 percent expect a return to wider conflict with Iran.

On external influence, 51 percent of respondents believe the US has more impact on Israel’s defence decisions than the Israeli government itself.

Separately, a large majority expressed concern over rising negative attitudes in the US towards Israel, while pessimism also remains high over the prospects of a lasting deal with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

China to press Iran to reopen Strait of Hormuz as Beijing talks begin

Talks have begun in Beijing, with the Strait of Hormuz and the ceasefire in focus.

China is expected to urge Iran to reopen the key shipping route, while also pushing for stability following the US naval blockade on Iranian ports.

Beijing has criticised both Washington’s move, calling it dangerous, and Iran’s continued closure of the strait.

Discussions are also expected to cover what support China may continue to offer Tehran, including at the United Nations, if sanctions are triggered over the blockade.

Iran’s foreign minister is seeking clarity on China’s position ahead of scheduled US talks, while Beijing wants assurances that Tehran avoids any further escalation before those meetings.

Israel coordinates with US as Hormuz tensions threaten Iran truce

Israel is coordinating closely with the United States as rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz put the Iran ceasefire under strain, according to an Israeli source.

The coordination reportedly includes contingency planning for a potential new round of strikes on Iran, targeting energy infrastructure and senior officials. Many of the plans were prepared before the ceasefire earlier this month.

The source said any renewed campaign would aim to pressure Iran back into negotiations, though the final decision rests with US President Donald Trump, who has expressed frustration over the stalled talks but is reluctant to return to full-scale conflict.

Israeli officials remain sceptical about diplomacy with Iran, while recent missile fire towards Gulf areas has accelerated internal military consultations in Israel.

Trump claimed Iran no longer has meaningful military capability and pointed to US actions, including a naval blockade, as evidence of success.

At the same time, he signalled caution about declaring full victory.

“We’re doing just about as well in Iran. But I don’t like talking about it until the jobs are finished,” he said.

He also referenced January’s military action in Venezuela as “one of the greatest military movements in history”, while comparing it to the Iran conflict.

Iran, however, still retains leverage over the Strait of Hormuz.

Israel has ramped up military readiness, with thousands of tonnes of munitions arriving in recent days and US fuel tankers stationed at key airports.

Most ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz continue to follow routes designated by Iranian authorities, according to shipping data.

About half of recent vessels were loaded at Iranian ports, despite a US blockade targeting Iranian shipping routes.

Seventeen ships crossed the strait between Friday and Sunday, including four loaded tankers, data from Kpler shows.

US forces have boarded at least two vessels since Apr 13 and say they have intercepted 38.

Middle East military spending steady at $218bn: SIPRI

Military spending in the Middle East reached an estimated $218 billion in 2025, only 0.1 percent higher than 2024, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

Israel’s defence spending fell 4.9 percent to $48.3 billion as operations in Gaza eased following a January 2025 ceasefire. However, its military budget remains 97 percent higher than in 2022.

Iran’s military spending also declined for a second consecutive year, dropping 5.6 percent to $7.4 billion in 2025, driven largely by high inflation of about 42 percent.

SIPRI says Iran’s official figures likely understate actual spending, noting the use of off-budget oil revenues for missile and drone production.

Rising fuel costs squeeze Asia’s most vulnerable

Fuel prices are climbing across Asia as global oil markets react to stalled US-Iran peace talks, widening the gap between investor sentiment and on-the-ground economic reality.

Brent crude rose above $107 per barrel before easing slightly to just over $106.50 in early Asian trading, pushing up gasoline prices across the region.

In South Korea, pump prices have edged higher despite government caps on wholesale petroleum products, with fuel costs up more than 18 percent since the US-Israel war on Iran began.

Seoul has begun distributing debit cards to the bottom 70 percent of income earners, with about 35.8 million people set to receive between $67 and $400 each.

Elsewhere, pressure is mounting. In the Philippines, minibus drivers receiving subsidies say profits are shrinking, with some earning less than $5 a day.

Israel has charged two air force personnel with allegedly working for Iranian intelligence, according to the Israeli daily Haaretz.

One of the soldiers has been accused of direct contact with a foreign agent, while the other is said to have assisted in establishing that contact, according to the Shin Bet internal security service and police.

Authorities said the pair told investigators they initially broke off ties with Iranian handlers after refusing to carry out weapons-related tasks, but later allegedly attempted to renew contact after communication was cut by the Iranian side.

Iran says first Hormuz toll revenue deposited in central bank

Iran Parliament Deputy Speaker Hamidreza Haji Babaei has said the first revenues collected from tolls imposed on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz have been deposited into the Central Bank account.

According to the Tasnim News Agency, he did not provide further details on how the revenue was collected or who paid it.

Before the current ceasefire, Tehran had said it had restricted passage to what it called “friendly” countries, with discussions also reported on introducing tolls for vessels using the strategic waterway.

No official clarification was given on whether fees were being charged or at what level.

In late March, Iran Embassy in India denied claims that ships were being charged $2 million (£1.5 million) to pass through the strait.

Another senior Iranian MP Alireza Salimi told Tasnim he had heard “reliable sources” confirming that fees had been collected, adding that charges vary depending on cargo type, risk level and vessel characteristics, with Iran setting the rules.

Clearing Hormuz Strait mines could take 6 months: report

A Pentagon assessment says it could take up to six months to fully clear Iranian-laid mines from the Strait of Hormuz, The Washington Post reports.

The waterway has been largely blocked since the start of the war, disrupting global energy supplies and pushing up oil prices.

Officials say even if fighting ends, mine-clearing operations could take months and are unlikely to begin before the conflict is over.

Lawmakers were told Iran may have deployed at least 20 mines in and around the strait, some using GPS technology, making them harder to detect.
