Houthis announce entry to Iran war with missile launch toward Israel

The Iran-backed Houthi rebel movement announced it had launched ballistic missiles against Israel on Saturday, marking its entry into the war.

“The Yemeni Armed Forces, with the help of Allah Almighty and relying upon Allah, have carried out the first military operation using a barrage of ballistic missiles targeting sensitive Israeli military sites in southern occupied Palestine,” it said in a statement.

The Houthi statement said the operation was a direct response to “continued military escalation, the targeting of infrastructure, and the perpetration of crimes and massacres against our brothers in Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, and Palestine”.

A Houthi official previously told CNN the group was prepared to join the war in support of Iran, if the US and Israel escalate their attacks.

What will it mean if launch of missile from Yemen at Israel is confirmed?

The Israeli army has reported detecting a missile launched from Yemen, the first such strike in the monthlong US‑Israel war on Iran.

While the Houthis have not claimed responsibility, the warning comes hours after Iran-aligned Yemeni rebels said they are prepared to intervene militarily if other countries join the US and Israel, or if the Red Sea is used to launch attacks on Iran.

The threat raises the possibility of a broader regional war, given the Houthis’ ability to target installations in Saudi Arabia and the UAE and disrupt shipping lanes.

Unlike Hezbollah and Iraqi armed groups, the Houthis have made no formal announcement of joining the conflict.

Experts note that while the movement shares political ties with Iran and Hezbollah, it is primarily motivated by domestic objectives rather than direct allegiance to Iran’s supreme leader.

The civilian toll of the war on Iran, one month on

The US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency says 1,464 civilians, including at least 217 children, have been killed in Iran during the first month of the conflict, which began on Feb 28.

The Israeli Defence Forces says it has dropped more than 12,000 bombs across Iran, including 3,600 on Tehran, while US Central Command reports striking over 9,000 targets nationwide.

Many hits have focused on police stations, militia buildings, military universities, IRGC homes, and ammunition stores -- often in civilian neighbourhoods.

Residents told the BBC that strikes on residential areas risk deepening public resentment, even among critics of the Iranian regime.

In Tehran, civilians reported little visible safety support, including shelters, evacuation aid, or temporary accommodation, and many feel exposed amid an internet blackout.

The Iranian government has not publicly outlined nationwide civil defence measures.

Global air travel disrupted as Iran war drives fuel costs higher

Global air travel has been severely disrupted, with many passengers unable to fly as planned after the Iran war forced closures at major hubs including Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi.

Low-cost carrier Wizz Air has suspended flights to Israel until Mar 29, and to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Amman, and Jeddah from mainland Europe until mid-September.

Jet fuel prices have more than doubled since the war began, the International Air Transport Association says. United Airlines announced last Friday it would cut flights due to soaring fuel costs.

“The reality is, jet fuel prices have more than doubled in the last three weeks. If prices stayed at this level, it would mean an extra $11bn in annual expense just for jet fuel,” said United CEO Scott Kirby. “For perspective, in United’s best year ever, we made less than $5bn.”

Deutsche Bank analysis shows average airfares -- covering domestic, international, last-minute, and advance tickets -- are higher compared with the same period last year.

Displaced Lebanese sleep in cars, on streets of Beirut

Thousands of Lebanese displaced by the conflict in southern Lebanon have been sleeping in their cars or on the streets of Beirut, as ongoing Israeli attacks on infrastructure, including bridges over the Litani River, make travel and evacuation “extremely difficult”.

More than 1.2 million people have been displaced across the country, many seeking shelter in schools and public buildings in Beirut.

The government is under growing pressure to accommodate the influx.

A forced evacuation notice this morning ordered residents to move north of the Zahrani River, an adjustment from earlier instructions to relocate north of the Litani River.

Displaced families are leaving homes and businesses behind, unsure when they will be able to return, while Israeli strikes continue to target villages near the border and areas around the city of Tyre.

Iran rejected claims by Donald Trump that the waterway was open, saying the US leader’s statement was "false".

Trump had said earlier that Iran had offered a “present” of 10 oil shipments that successfully passed through the strait as part of negotiations.

Iran’s new supreme leader absent for security but ‘in full health’

Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is said to be in good health and leading the country, an Iranian official said, attributing his absence from public view to security concerns.

“The reason for his absence from public view is the observance of security considerations due to the current special circumstances,” said Ali Bahraini, Iran’s representative to the UN office in Geneva, adding that “he is in full health and is continuing to lead the country".

Khamenei has not appeared in public since his father, former supreme leader Ali Khamenei, was killed last month in joint US-Israeli strikes. Only statements purportedly from the new leader have been read out since his appointment.

A source earlier told CNN he had suffered a fractured foot, a bruise around his left eye, and minor facial injuries on the first day of the bombardment campaign.

Cryptocurrency use surges in Iran

Iran has seen a sharp rise in cryptocurrency activity since the start of the US-Israeli war, with analysts saying digital assets are being used to bypass sanctions on the IRGC and to shield civilians from rising inflation.

Data from Chainalysis shows that more than $10 million in cryptocurrencies moved out of Iranian exchanges between Feb 28 and Mar 2.

The firm added that several digital wallets involved in the surge are directly linked to the IRGC.

Israel to ‘intensify’ strikes on Iran over missile fire, minister warns

Defence Minister Israel Katz has said Israel will step up strikes against Iran following continued missile attacks, warning the Islamic republic would pay a “heavy price”.

“Despite the warnings, the firing continues -- consequently, IDF strikes in Iran will intensify and expand to other targets in sectors that help the regime develop and use military means against Israeli civilians. They will pay a heavy price, an increasingly heavy one, for this war crime,” Katz said in a video released by his office.

Trump’s strike delay fails to calm oil trade

Brent crude rose above $110 a barrel again on Friday, despite Donald Trump saying on Thursday that talks with Tehran were going “very well” and that he was postponing military strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure until at least Apr 6.

Such statements have previously helped calm markets, but traders’ scepticism appears to be growing, with AJ Bell Investment Director Russ Mould saying Washington and Tehran seem to be operating in “parallel worlds”.

Iran war threatens humanitarian aid in Africa

Rising tensions in the Middle East are triggering global economic disruption, affecting key trade routes and supply chains while pushing up the cost of fuel, fertiliser and food.

In Africa, aid agencies warn that increasing costs are putting food security at risk in countries that depend heavily on imports for food and fuel.

Melaku Yirga of Mercy Corps says the impact of the conflict in Iran comes at a particularly difficult time for countries such as Sudan, Somalia and Ethiopia, where millions are already facing drought, hunger, displacement and conflict.
