Bangladesh win 22 gold medals in Special Olympics 2019

Bangladesh have secured 22 gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals in the Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi.

They made the haul until 8pm on Wednesday after the inauguration of the games on Mar 14, Special Olympics Bangladesh said in a media release. 

It sent a 139-strong group of athletes to the United Arab Emirates for the games.

The Bangladeshi athletes will return home on Friday after Thursday’s closing ceremony.

Bangladesh took part in 11 events of the tournament- athletics, swimming, bocce, table tennis, badminton, handball (men’s unified), handball (women), football (men’s unified), football (women’s unified), volleyball and basketball (unified).

Special Olympics are the world’s largest humanitarian sporting event and a global movement which focuses on the empowerment of people of determination with intellectual disabilities through the power of sport.

Over 7,000 athletes from over 170 countries were to be joining the series of sports, as well as a variety of initiatives and activities held across the UAE in this years games.
