Jamaat-e-Islami has announced its new central leadership for the 2026-2028 term, reappointing Mia Golam Parwar as secretary general and naming newly elected lawmaker ATM Azharul Islam as the first Nayeb-e-Ameer.
The announcement came following a virtual meeting of the party’s central Majlis-e-Shura on Friday, chaired by the party chief Shafiqur Rahman, who recently took office as the Leader of the Opposition in parliament.
Azharul’s appointment marks his return to a top organisational post after a 13-year hiatus spent in prison.
He was the party's assistant secretary general when arrested in August 2012. He was released last year after being acquitted of war crimes charges following the fall of Awami League government.
In December 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced Azharul to death for war crimes on six counts, including genocide, kidnapping, and torture. The judgement had been upheld by the Appellate Division in 2019.
Azharul even secured a seat in the general election from the Rangpur-2 constituency in the Feb 12 general election.
The other Nayeb-e-Ameers named are lawmakers Mujibur Rahman and Syed Abdullah Md Taher, and former MP ANM Shamsul Islam.
According to a post on the party's verified Facebook page, the Majlis-e-Shura also formed an 88-member Central Working Council, which includes 21 women. Additionally, 59 members, including 17 women, were elected to the third tier of the central Majlis-e-Shura.
The virtual session was attended in person by the party’s central Nayeb-e-Ameers and secretaries at the central office, while other Shura members joined remotely. During the meeting, the Ameer-e-Jamaat administered the oath of office to the newly elected leaders.
The reshuffle follows a significant political shift in 2024 and 2025, during which the party’s registration was restored and it emerged as the main opposition bloc in the current parliament.
