Senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher has alleged the government and law-enforcing agencies have "tilted" towards "a specific political party", raising concerns over the fairness of the upcoming general election.
He made the remarks at a media briefing on Wednesday at the party chief’s office in Bashundhara.
Without naming any specific political party, he said: "Over the last week or two, the way the Bangladesh government and our law-enforcing authorities -- including the Army -- have leaned towards a specific party, and the way the administration is demonstrating its loyalty to that party, has raised fears.
“We are left wondering if the upcoming election will once again be a fixed election, similar to those of the past."
He added, "We believe that this kind of fixed election will lead Bangladesh towards destruction."
On behalf of Jamaat-e-Islami, he called upon the government and the Election Commission to "remain neutral and play their part in protecting Bangladesh".
Earlier in the morning, a three-member delegation from the European Union (EU) paid a courtesy call on Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman at his office in Bashundhara.
Following the meeting, the former MP spoke with journalists.
Taher explained that although the primary discussion centred on the EU sending observers for the upcoming general election, the dialogue also covered the broader electoral landscape and the repatriation of Rohingya refugees.
He said, “We have said that a fair and credible election in Bangladesh is absolutely vital. The lack of such elections has been one of the primary causes of the crises Bangladesh has faced over the last 55 years.”
The deputy chief remarked that Jamaat-e-Islami believes a free and fair election is necessary to resolve the current “stalemate” in the country’s political arena.
He added, “If the next election is not free, fair, and neutral, the crisis will not end. Instead, a new crisis will emerge, and it will be even deeper.”
He noted that the party had formally conveyed these concerns to the EU delegation.
