Tarique Rahman, who returned from self-imposed exile in London after over 17 years, is set to enrol on the electoral roll on Saturday.
Voter registration is mandatory to contest in the general election, which is scheduled for Feb 12.
The BNP’s acting chief is also expecting to receive his national identity card on Saturday.
The last date for candidates to collect their nomination papers to contest in the general election is Dec 29.
Supporters have already bought nomination papers on behalf of Tarique from Bogura-6 constituency.
The election schedule was announced on Dec 11.
In a meeting with the Election Commission on Dec 22, senior BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed had said Tarique would complete his voter registration and collect his NID on Dec 27.
The EC had assured the party of its full cooperation.
Whether Tarique will have to travel to the EC office in Agargaon to register as a voter is still undecided. He lives in Gulshan.
Election Commissioner Anwarul Islam Sarker on Thursday said Tarique travelling to the EC headquarters raises some security concerns.
"Just as Tarique Rahman’s security is a concern, the security of the Election Commission buildings, a KPI installation, is also a matter," Anwar said.
It is possible to register as a voter sitting at home.
Bangladesh first prepared its voter list with photos in 2007-08, when Tarique was in jail. He went to the UK, citing the need for advanced treatment, the day he was released from jail in 2008. He left home with his wife and daughter.
Wife Zubaida Rahman, however, enlisted as a voter after the fall of the previous Awami League government in a student-led uprising in August last year.
His passport expired while he was staying in London and was never renewed during the Awami League regime.
