Sharif Osman bin Hadi, an independent election hopeful in the Dhaka-8 constituency and convenor of the Inqilab Moncho platform, has been wounded in a shooting attack in the capital's Bijoynagar area.
The incident occurred shortly after Jummah prayers on Friday.
He was subsequently rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors said he had suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was being treated in intensive care.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Deputy Commissioner for Media Muhammad Talebur Rahman said the attack took place around 2:25pm near Box Culvert Road.
“Attackers arrived on motorcycles, shot him and then fled,” he said, adding that they had used three motorcycles.
Authorities later said Hadi was shot near his left ear. Citing doctors, Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Outpost's Inspector Md Faruk said the victim had lost a lot of blood and remained in critical condition.
Motijheel Division Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Harun Or Rashid said the attackers fired at Hadi while he was riding in a rickshaw near the DR Tower on Box Culvert Road.
“It is not immediately clear who carried out the attack or why,” he said. “We are working to identify those involved.”
One of Hadi’s associates said the group had planned to distribute leaflets at a mosque after Friday prayers as part of his election campaign. They were later due to gather at Suhrawardy Udyan for lunch and discussions when news of the shooting reached them.
Supporters of Hadi appealed for B-negative blood at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, saying he had lost a lot of blood in the emergency department and doctors had asked them to arrange donors urgently.
A large crowd gathered outside the hospital’s emergency unit following the incident.
Earlier in the day, Hadi posted on Facebook that he did not have any campaign posters or banners in Dhaka-8 and joked that he therefore did not face the pressure of them being torn down.
The Dhaka-8 constituency includes Motijheel, Shahjahanpur, Paltan, Ramna and Shahbagh areas.
Hadi had previously announced plans to contest the seat as an independent candidate.
The BNP has nominated senior leader Mirza Abbas for the constituency, while Jamaat-e-Islami’s deputy chief Helal Uddin is preparing for the race. The Revolutionary Workers' Party has nominated its general secretary Saiful Haque.
Hadi emerged as a prominent figure after last year’s July Uprising and later helped form Inqilab Moncho, a cultural and political platform that says it seeks to oppose all forms of domination and work towards a just and sovereign state.
