Jamaat-e-Islami has expelled Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam after a video showing him in a private moment with a woman went viral on social media.

The decision came at an emergency meeting of the party's Central Executive Council on Wednesday afternoon, according to a Jamaat media statement.

The controversy erupted after the video circulated widely online. Nazrul had claimed the woman seen in the footage was his second wife.

Jamaat said an internal investigation found evidence of “moral misconduct” and that Nazrul had been expelled under Article 62 of the party constitution.

It also decided to immediately inform the Election Commission of the disciplinary action.

The meeting was held at 4pm at the Minto Road official residence of Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman.

Controversy erupted after the video surfaced on Monday night.

Initially, Jamaat leaders and activists claimed it had been generated using artificial intelligence.

A day later, Nazrul wrote on Facebook that the woman seen in the footage was his second wife.

Nazrul, who also served as a member of Jamaat's Central Majlish-e-Shura -- the highest policymaking and supreme advisory body of the party -- came under intense criticism online after clips from the video circulated widely.

Parts of the footage appear to show him alone with the woman in a room, while others show the pair in intimate moments.

Nazrul could not be reached for comment on Wednesday. District-level Jamaat leaders also did not issue any official statement.

In his Facebook post on Tuesday, the MP claimed he had visited the Moghbazar office of his second wife's father in Dhaka on Jul 13 with both his first and second wives.

He alleged that while they were there, several unidentified men entered the room, held them hostage and extorted Tk 100,000.

He also claimed the group later demanded several hundred thousand taka more, alleging the incident stemmed from a longstanding family dispute involving his second wife's father.
