All programmes marking the 40th founding anniversary of the Jatiya Party have been postponed following the declaration of state mourning over the death of BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

The decision was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday.

The party’s founding anniversary was scheduled to be observed on Thursday.

According to the statement, the postponement was ordered by the Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader in view of the three-day state mourning declared by the government.

“On the instructions of the honourable chairman of the Jatiya Party, GM Quader, all programmes organised nationwide on the occasion of the party’s 40th founding anniversary have been postponed due to the three-day state mourning on the death of former prime minister and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia,” it said.

The government announced three days of state mourning following Khaleda’s death, while Wednesday, the day of her funeral, was declared a public holiday.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the interim government’s Advisory Council on Tuesday.

Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus later announced the decision in an address to the nation.

Khaleda, who had been undergoing treatment at Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital for 40 days, was declared dead by doctors at around 6am on Tuesday.
