BNP leader Rashed Khan has alleged that Abdul Hannan Masud, the MP for Noakhali-6, gave false information in his election affidavit, and has questioned whether this could lead to the cancellation of his parliamentary seat.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Rashed said the Hatiya MP had admitted on a television talk show to including “inaccurate” details in his affidavit.
According to Rashed, Masud said his lawyer had advised him to file false information in the affidavit, arguing it would make things easier for future business dealings and tax returns.
Yet Masud has also claimed to own no immovable property, which, Rashed said, means his entire affidavit rests on “untrue claims”.
Rashed cited remarks made by Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah on Aug 11, 2025, when he told reporters that the Election Commission (EC) would investigate any false information in an affidavit even after voting.
If the claims were proven true, the candidacy would be annulled and the person would lose their seat as MP, Sanaullah had said, adding that the provision was specifically written into the Representation of the People Order (RPO).
Defending his own past remarks about Masud, Rashed said their accuracy could be checked simply by going through the information in Masud's own affidavit.
He said Masud had recently claimed to have paid his wife's semester fees with money borrowed from a man identified only as “Mahbub Bhai”, and to have bought bricks for a new house while still owing Tk 300,000 that he could not repay due to lack of funds.
He also questioned why the honesty and financial struggles the MP spoke of publicly were not fully reflected in his election affidavit.
The allegations stand in stark contrast to Masud's official election filings, where the 26-year-old National Citizen Party (NCP) politician declared assets worth more than Tk 9.8 million and an annual business income of Tk 600,000 through his firm Digilanty Global.
Affidavit submissions filed earlier put Masud’s wealth at five times that of his father, Amirul Islam Mohammad Abdul Malek, a rival candidate in the same constituency.
When asked about Rashed’s allegations, the NCP senior joint chief coordinator told bdnews24.com he had not seen the Facebook post and would not comment without reviewing it.
