BNP senior leader Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has warned that instability in the country would continue until a political government was reinstated.
On Thursday, Khosru highlighted the absence of an elected government and its impact on accountability, stressing that the crisis would persist in the absence of public support for a political leadership.
He said people in Bangladesh wanted stability in the country and to gradually take it back to a democratic order, so everyone could live a safe life.
He said if the election were held soon, people would get a democratic country where the government had public support and would be politically powerful.
“In the absence of it [people’s support], such incidents [social disorder] will continue. It will take place more in the future.”
‘‘As soon as we can reestablish a political environment in the country with an elected government through an election, there will be a political government with public support, and the state bodies will be under control. This isn’t possible without an elected government.”
“Now there’s a crisis of accountability. Currently, there’s no parliament and therefore, no accountability. We can’t blame anyone for this.”
Khosru went to visit Gono Odhikar Parishad chief Nurul Haque Nur at his home in Hatirjheel Mohanagar Project. He spoke to Nur and queried about his treatment.
Later, Khosru spoke to the media and said Nur would travel to Singapore for better medical treatment.
He also stressed that the country was moving towards elections, a goal that the BNP had worked towards for the past 15–16 years.
“The election process is independent of any party's demands. Parties can have demands, but they must go to the people with those and return to the parliament with the public mandate to pass bills,” Khosru said, adding that anyone attempting to create instability would face political consequences.
Khosru underscored the importance of public trust in democratic leaders.
“If the people lose faith, we risk opening the door for other forces, allowing them space to operate,” he warned.
