BNP leader Rashed Khan has said Shadik Kayem is no longer fit to hold the post of Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) vice-president after joining Jamaat-e-Islami's politics.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Rashed said Islami Chhatra Shibir had pushed for a ban on campus student politics as part of the 2024 July movement's nine-point charter, a demand Anti-discrimination Student Movement leader Abdul Kader rejected.
A clause banning "subservient" politics was added instead, after talks between the two sides, he added.
Calling Shibir now the "biggest" subservient student outfit itself, Rashed said DUCSU's current VP, along with most of its leaders, had campaigned for Jamaat during the February election.
He argued that Shadik “betrayed the blood of the martyrs” by resigning from Shibir to join Jamaat and launch a mayoral campaign for Dhaka South City Corporation despite promising to eliminate partisan politics before the student council polls.
The BNP politician demanded an immediate public apology from Shadik for “deceiving” students and urged him to step down from the DUCSU post without delay.
The outburst follows an official announcement on Monday by Chhatra Shibir Central Publicity Secretary SM Farhad, who confirmed that several organisational leaders were granted leave during the half-yearly session.
The same statement named eight other central leaders who stepped down alongside Shadik: Media Secretary Mutasim Billah, HRD Secretary Sharif Mahmud, Student Rights Secretary Muhibur Rahman Muhib, Planning and Development Secretary Riazul Islam, Business Education Secretary Nurul Huda, Library Secretary Arafat Hossain Milon, Debate Secretary Habibur Rahman Arman, and Dawah Secretary Shahin Ahmed.
The group then met Leader of the Opposition and Jamaat chief Shafiqur Rahman on Wednesday.
Shadik rose to prominence during the July Uprising, later served as Dhaka University Shibir's president, and most recently held the post of Shibir's central publicity secretary.
His name has circulated for some time as Jamaat's likely mayoral candidate for Dhaka South, though the party has yet to confirm this officially.
Attempts to reach Shadik for comment were unsuccessful.
