The BNP has cancelled the founding anniversary rally the party scheduled on Tuesday, saying the decision was taken in consideration of the traffic congestion and public inconvenience the event could cause.
It decided to organise a voluntary canal and drains cleaning drive by the Dhaka Metropolitan North and South units of the BNP.
On Monday, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the cancellation of the rally and the new programme in a video message.
He said, ‘‘We have made some changes in our programme, especially in Dhaka. You are aware that we scheduled a rally tomorrow (Tuesday) but we have cancelled it now.”
"We have cancelled the rally because when a rally is held, the entire city comes to a standstill. This causes great suffering for the people and creates traffic jams. Considering this public suffering, we have dropped tomorrow's rally."
Rizvi said, “Instead, Dhaka North and South BNP will conduct a drive to clean the canals and drains in their areas. Dhaka Metropolitan North and South BNP and their affiliates will take part in this.”
Rizvi said the canals, drains, and other water bodies in both city corporations will be cleaned with bleaching powder and other necessary materials. “This will be a voluntary drive. The (BNP) activists will do the work by themselves and no one will be hired to do the work.”
Previously, a rally was scheduled at 2:30pm on Tuesday in front of the BNP central office to celebrate the 47th founding anniversary of the party.
