Awami League picks mayor candidates for Rajshahi, Sylhet, Barishal city polls

The Awami League has nominated its mayor candidates for the July 30 elections to Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barishal city corporations.

AHM Khairuzzaman Liton is fighting the polls with the ruling party’s boat logo in Rajshahi, Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran in Sylhet and Serniabat Sadiq Abdullah in Barishal.

The Awami League’s local government nomination board chose the candidates in a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Ganabhaban on Friday.

It said in a statement that it has also nominated MA Matin as the candidate for the Kurhigram-3 bypolls.

The 14-party ruling coalition headed by the Awami League earlier announced the party’s Rajshahi City unit chief and former mayor Liton’s name as their candidate.

Sylhet City Awami League President Kamran is also a former mayor.

Sadiq is a joint general secretary of Barishal City chapter. His father Abul Hasnat Abdullah is a former chief whip of parliament and nephew of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
