Aditi Baral, 27, a post-graduate student of a law college in Dhaka, came under the attack at Amlaparha on Saturday evening, Bagerhat Superintendent of Police Pankaj Chandra Roy said.

Aditi has been admitted to the state-run Bagerhat General Hospital.

Pankaj told bdnews24.com that an unidentified man stopped him and asked who she was when she was returning home at Shaltala from the programme at Amlaparha High School.

Her mother Happy was still at the programme organised for women.

“As I was identifying myself, the attacker hit my belly and fled,” Aditi said.

She also alleged the murderers of her father Kalidas Baral, who was shot dead in Bagerhat on Aug 20, 2000, were involved in the attack on her.

Bagerhat Civil Surgeon Arun Chandra Mandal said Aditi received a sharp weapon injury in her belly. She was out of danger, the doctor said.

Happy, an Awami League MP from a seat reserved for women, also alleged that her husband’s killers were planning to murder her and her daughter now.

“Many in the party did not take it well when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made me an MP. That can also be the reason behind the attack on my daughter,” she added.

SP Pankaj said police tasked several teams with the job to catch the attacker and ensure the security of the MP’s family.
