The baby was born at London’s Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead on Saturday, Tulip said in a tweet.

“@chris_percy and I are very pleased to announce the birth of our daughter Azalea Joy Percy. Staff at @RoyalFreeNHS were absolutely amazing,” Tulip tweeted at 10am local time on Saturday.

The 33-year old and her husband Percy were expecting the baby girl in April, Camden New Journal had reported.

“With my name Tulip, we thought it would be nice to think of a flower for her name,” it had quoted her as saying.

The name Azalea refers to a species of rhododendron flowers.

She had tweeted about being “ill” in August last year but was seen working in September.

Tulip was appointed Permanent Private Secretary to the Shadow Minister for Culture, Media and Sport that month.

She was also appointed a member of the UK Parliament’s Select Committee on women and equalities issues in July.

Daughter of Bangabandhu’s younger daughter Sheikh Rehana, Tulip had earlier revealed her plans on how to bring up her child.

“...I will not be having a lot of time off. There is a nursery at the House of Commons and we’ve looked around it, and it’s very nice,” she was quoted as saying.

“But Chris has said he will change his working patterns to work around mine.”

Tulip married Percy in 2013 when she was a councillor for Regents Park.
