Some BNP supporters went to the hospital after being injured in the clash. That was when Chhabi Biswas was assaulted in front of the main gate at the emergency unit.

"I came here to check on a freedom-fighter who is being treated here and am now receiving treatment myself," said Biswas.

Mohammad Hasnine, the driver of the MP’s car, said, “There were eight people in the car including sir (Biswas). One of them was sick. Seeing trouble in the emergency unit, sir told me to turn the car around.

"But as soon as we got out through the gate, 30-40 young men attacked the car.”

The other riders moved away as the BNP supporters vandalised the car and assaulted the driver. Then they set the car ablaze.

The attackers fled when police, reporters and hospital workers arrived there. Later Biswas was taken to the hospital police outpost.

He was taken to the emergency unit for treatment half an hour after things returned to normal.

Chawkbazar police OC Azizul Haque said they detained six people over the incident.
