BNP's Matin Chowdhury dies
A former Muslim Leaguer Abdul Matin Chowdhury joined BNP when the party was floated in 1978 and got elected to the Parliament four times.

Dhaka, Aug 4 (bdnews24.com) – Former Home Minister and BNP leader Abdul Matin Chowdhury has passed away from old-age complications at the age of 72 years in a Dhaka hospital.
His nephew Moniruzzaman Chowdhury told bdnews24.com that Matin Chowdhury died at around 10:15am [on Saturday] at Monowara Hospital in Baily Road. He was under treatment at the hospital for the last two months.
Matin Chowdhury was treated at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital in 2002 after suffering from brain haemorrhage. He has been ill since then, Moniruzzaman added.
BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rezvi said that the Matin Chowdhury's first Namaz-e-Janaza would be held at the party's Naya Paltan headquarters around 3pm. His remains would be kept at BIRDEM hospital's morgue.
A second Namaz-e-Janaza will be held at the National Parliament premises at 11am on Sunday and then his remains will be taken to Kanchon village in Narayanganj's Rupganj area for burial at his family graveyard.
Matin was a Muslim League leader during the Pakistan rule. He got involved with BNP's politics at the party's inception in 1978. He got elected to the Jatiya Sangsad (Parliament) four times since 1979.
He shouldered the responsibility of the Home Ministry after BNP took over in 1991 and was assigned the Communications Ministry after the party won the 'controversial' polls on Feb 15, 1996.
Matin also was the Textiles Minister during the BNP-Jamaat alliance's rule in 2001 and later was made a minister without portfolio after he got ill.
He was a member of BNP's highest policymaking forum, the National Standing Committee. Before that, he also held the offices of the party's Vice President and Joint Secretary General.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia paid her respect to the deceased leader in a statement and prayed for his departed soul. She said that Matin Chowdhury has played his role in establishing the party's ideals.
