Dhaka, Jan 1 (bdnews24.com) — BNP has nominated candidates for the by-elections in two constituencies, which were left vacant after the death of their MPs.
Sheikh Sujat Mia will represent the party in the run for Habiganj -1 constituency while Khaled Hossain Mahbub will fight for the Brahmanbaria -3 seat.
Standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan confirmed bdnews24.com about their nominations, but declined to give further details.
A senior BNP leader, preferring not to be named, said the candidates were informed of the decision by officials of the chairperson's Gulshan office on Saturday evening.
The interested candidates were interviewed by a board consisting of chairperson Khaleda Zia, standing committee members Nazrul Islam Khan, Moudud Ahmed and senior secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday.
A total of five candidates collected nomination papers from the party's Naya Paltan office at Tk 1,000 each. Each candidate had to deposit Tk 20,000 during submission of nomination paper as security money.
The by-elections in Habiganj-1 and Brahmanbaria-3 constituencies will be held on Jan 27.
The candidates can submit their nomination papers for the by-elections until Jan 2 and withdraw candidature by Jan 11.
On Dec 31 last year, ruling Awami League chose Mushfiq Hossain Chowdhury to contest the by-polls in Habiganj-1 while Ubaidul Muktadir Chowdhury was selected to contest the Brahmanbaria-3 by-election.
The Election Commission declared the two seats vacant when Awami League MP from Habiganj-1 (comprising Nabiganj and Bahubal Upazilas) Dewan Farid Gazi died on Nov 19 and another ruling party MP of Brahmanbaria-3 (Sadar Upazila) Lutful Hai Sachchu died on Nov 22.
