Internal feud in Faridganj BNP in Chandpur, clash feared

Chandpur, Aug 19 (BDNEWS) - A severe internal feud has been created inside Faridganj upazila BNP in Chandpur centring the formation of upazila BNP committee and nominating party candidate in the coming election.

It is apprehended that this feud might turn in to a bloody clash any time.

According to Faridganj upazila BNP sources, Alamgir Haider Khan, lawmaker from Chandpur –6 constituency for the last four times including the election of February 15 as well as general secretary of Chandpur District BNP, did not face any problem to get nomination in the last elections. He became sick after the election of 2001. At the time, more than one dozen aspirants became active for nomination to participate in the election.

Now they are lobbying for getting nomination. Many grassroots level workers complained that for a long time Alamgir Haider Khan has turned the Upazila committee into a pocket committee.

Besides, Advocate Dulal Mia Patwari is now working as the president of Faridganj upazila BNP. He is very much known as loyal to MP Alamgir Haider Khan. But polarization started when Dulal Mia declared himself as a candidate for BNP ticket for competing the next parliament election. Then Alamgir Haider declared a new committee of upazila BNP. As a result, processions and counter processions, rallies and counter rallies are being held for the last few days in support of the incumbent MP and against him for last few days in a show of strength.

Some senior leaders of upazila BNP apprehended that this internal feud might turn into a bloody clash.

Dulal Mia told BDNEWS that he is still the president of the committee and will continue in the same position for two years. Besides, he has no time to think about the committee. Dulal Mia is now busy in carrying out mass contact in favour of his candidature of parliament election.

He also added that Alamgir Haider is doing these out of envy Dulal Mia has decided to participate in the election. He claimed that is not worried about the activities of Alamgir Haider Khan. "And my politics is not finished if I am excluded from the committee. Activities of Faridganj BNP will continue under my leadership," Dulal Mia said.

Alamgir Haider Khan, convener of Faridganj upazila BNP and local MP, told BDNEWS in this connection that the committee has been dissolved to restore discipline in Faridganj upazila BNP. He also said that he had dissolved the upazila BNP committee and has been acting as its convener as per the demand of the party leaders and workers.

About Dulal Mia Patwari, the president of the dissolved committee, Alamgir Haider said that the leaders and workers of upazila BNP were dissatisfied with Dulal Mia. The incumbent MP alleged that Dulal Mia despite being a leader of the party had realised huge money from the workers in the name of helping them in different cases. He also alleged that Dulal Mia embezzled at least Tk two crore in the name of expanding the connections of Palli Bidyut in the rural areas.
