Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will use his personal vehicle for official travel instead of the government car allocated to his office.

BNP Media Cell member Atiqur Rahman Ruman said on Wednesday that the prime minister will travel in his own Toyota car, with his own driver and fuel purchased privately.

“He is not using the official vehicle of the prime minister,” Ruman said.

He added that during Wednesday’s engagements, Tarique travelled to the National Memorial in Savar and to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in his personal car before proceeding to the Secretariat in the same vehicle.

The prime minister has also reduced the size of his motorcade, citing traffic concerns.

“Previously, the motorcade had 13 to 14 vehicles. It has now been reduced to four,” Ruman said.

On his first day in office after taking oath, the prime minister used a vehicle without a national flag. However, the flag will be used during state functions and visits by foreign dignitaries, he said.

Ruman said Tarique had decided to hold cabinet meetings at the Secretariat instead of the Prime Minister’s Office to minimise traffic congestion.

“When cabinet meetings are held at the Prime Minister’s Office, ministers travel from the Secretariat, creating congestion and causing inconvenience to the public due to VIP movement. Considering this, most cabinet meetings will be held at the Secretariat,” he said.

The prime minister has also instructed the relevant authorities to discontinue the practice of stationing uniformed police along both sides of roads during his movement in the capital.

On Wednesday morning, Tarique left his Gulshan residence in his white Toyota car to pay tribute to the Liberation War martyrs at the National Memorial in Savar.

He later laid wreaths at the graves of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, accompanied by members of his cabinet, before attending the first cabinet meeting at the Secretariat.
