Legendary Indian classical musician Annapurna Devi dies at 91

The legendary Indian classical musician Annapurna Devi has died, according to Indian media reports.

She passed away at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday at the age of 91, NDTV reports.

Hospital officials say she had been suffering from various issues related to her advanced age.

Devi was born on Apr 23, 1927 in Maihar and became a renowned player of the surbahar, or the bass sitar.

She was trained at home by her father Ustad Alauddin Khan, who established the Senia-Maihar gharana, a school of Hindustani classical music.

 

From 1941 to 1962, Devi was married to famous Indian classical musician Ravi Shankar. The two had a son, Shubhendra Shankar, who died in 1992. She rarely gave public performances after her divorce.

In 1982 Devi married management consultant Rooshikumar Pandya. Pandya passed away in 2013.

According to The Indian Express, sarod players Aashish Khan, Amit Bhattacharya, Bahadur Khan, Basant Kabra and bansuri player Hariprasad Chau were all students of Devi.
