A massive fire has broken out on the Rajdhani Express, bound from India’s Thiruvananthapuram to the capital New Delhi, in Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam, reports Indian broadcaster NDTV.
The blaze sparked around 5:15am on an air-conditioned coach carrying 68 passengers, officials said. However, they claim no one was injured.
The incident occurred between the Vikramgarh Alot and Luni Richha stations and also damaged the second luggage-cum-guard van (SLR) attached to the rear of the AC coach.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
The affected coach was detached from the rake, and the overhead electric supply (OHE) was switched off to ensure safety, NDTV said.
A video from the scene showed the fire spreading to some trees near the tracks as dense, dark smoke billowed into the air.
The passengers on board were safely rescued, and alternative rail journeys were arranged for them, the railway authorities said.
Once the guard van and coach were detached from the rest of the train, it resumed its journey around 9:45am, railway spokesman Harshit Shrivastava told news agency PTI.
Another train coach will be added to the train later down the line to restore its full capacity.
The Rajdhani Express departed Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram on Friday and was scheduled to reach Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station at 12:30pm. It had covered about 2,500km and was 650km from the capital when the blaze sparked.
The fire disrupted rail traffic, affecting the schedules of at least 18 trains, NDTV said.
