The Election Commission has announced restrictions on the movement of several types of vehicles across the country ahead of the election and referendum.
According to the directive, the movement of taxi cabs, pick-ups, microbuses and trucks will be barred from 12am on Feb 11 to 12am on Feb 12.
In addition, motorcycles will be barred from operating from 12am on Feb 10 until 12am on Feb 13.
The ban was announced in a notice issued by the Road Transport and Highways Division on Sunday, a statement said.
However, the restrictions will not apply to vehicles used by law enforcing agencies, the armed forces, administrative authorities and authorised election observers.
Emergency service vehicles, including ambulances, as well as transports carrying medicines, medical supplies, essential goods and newspapers, are also exempt from the ban.
The notification further notes that vehicles travelling to or from airports will be allowed to operate, provided passengers can show valid tickets or similar proof.
Long-distance passenger transports will also be permitted under certain conditions.
Vehicles used by contesting candidates and their election agents, along with those assigned to journalists and observers, may be exempt with prior approval from the returning officer and the display of authorised stickers.
Motorcycles may also be used by officers and employees engaged in election-related duties or other individuals granted special permission.
Recognising telecommunication services as essential, vehicles operated by the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and licensed organisations will likewise remain exempt.
The notification adds that effective measures will be taken to ensure necessary flexibility on key roads, highways and connecting routes, particularly for travel into and out of inter-district or metropolitan areas.
District magistrates and metropolitan police commissioners have also been empowered to impose or relax additional restrictions on vehicles depending on local circumstances.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs has formed a Law and Order Coordination Cell to ensure the election and referendum are held in a fair, peaceful and orderly manner.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the ministry said the cell will operate round-the-clock, allowing citizens to quickly report complaints, share information or seek assistance in emergencies during the election period.
The designated emergency hotline numbers are: 02-47118700, 02-47118701, 02-47118702 and 02-47118703.
Citizens can also contact mobile numbers 01550-064226 (WhatsApp) and 01550-064227.
