On the eve of the parliamentary election, Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin has addressed the nation, calling on citizens to go to polling centres fearlessly and exercise their right to vote.
He also urged everyone to accept the results of the democratic process, whatever they may be.
With the election and referendum set for Thursday, exactly one and a half years after the July Uprising, the CEC spoke to the nation on Wednesday evening.
He said, “[On Thursday], voting for one of the most important elections in our history will take place. At this historic moment, I pay my deepest respects to the martyrs of the Great Liberation War, and also remember those who fell in the July Uprising, whose blood has brought us to the threshold of democratic advancement.
“I pray for the forgiveness of their souls. I also pray for the swift recovery and normal life of the injured July activists.”
The CEC emphasised that voting is not only a citizen’s right but also a responsibility.
“I hope you all conscientiously fulfil this duty. I call on political parties, candidates and voters to act responsibly to maintain a peaceful and harmonious environment.
“Difference of opinion is natural in a democracy. Remembering this, come to polling centres in a festive spirit, vote for your preferred candidate, and accept the result as part of the democratic process.”
Nasir added, “Set aside personal inconvenience and help make this national election successful. Assist election officers, field magistrates and law enforcement in handling any unintended incidents.
“With our collective effort, we can witness a fair, beautiful, peaceful, and festive election. I end by once again urging your voluntary participation. May Almighty Allah guide us.”
Polling across 299 constituencies will run continuously from 7:30am to 4:30pm on Thursday.
Voting in Sherpur-3, postponed due to a candidate’s death, will take place later.
