Locals have detained a Jamaat-e-Islami leader with money in Cumilla’s Muradnagar Upazila over allegedly “buying votes”.
The same day, a video of two BNP workers being detained in Chauddagram Upazila for allegedly handing out cash with voter slips went viral.
Authorities have launched investigations into both incidents.
Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Md Reza Hasan said the two incidents took place on Wednesday morning.
He said, “The Electoral Inquiry Committee will investigate the incidents and the judicial magistrates will take action.”

The arrested Jamaat leader is Habibur Rahman Helali, the head of the party in the Upazila’s Saliakandi Union.
Witnesses say Helali was detained along with money by locals and handed over to the administration.
Muradnagar Upazila administrator (UNO) and Assistant Returning Officer Abdur Rahman said the executive magistrate (assistant commissioner, land) ordered that he be taken into police custody.
Muradnagar Police chief Hasan Jamil said the detainee is in police custody, and further action will follow administrative instructions.
On the other hand, two BNP activists named Abdul Mannan and Fakir Member were detained by locals on charges of distributing money with voter slips in Gunabati Union of the Cumilla-11 constituency.
A video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking widespread criticism.
Chauddagram Upazila administrator (UNO) and Assistant Returning Officer Md Nurul Amin said, “We sent police there after hearing about the incident, but they already fled. It has been reported to the Electoral Inquiry Committee, and they will take action.”
