Charani Jamidar Bari, a historic monument

The once-beautiful brick structure is now losing its lustre as the plaster peels off and algae spreads over the walls and roof. Creepers and weeds cover the grounds. Puthia’s Charani Jamidar Bari takes visitors back into the pages of history as the ruins of the home of landlord Jamidar Anup Narayan and his sons stands as a remarkable monument to the past.

All that seems to remain of Charani Jamidar Bari, built of concrete and cement, is a few pillars. It hardly feels as if this was once the lavish home of Jamindar Rupendra Narayan. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi

This room at Charani Jamidar Bari is now open to the elements. The weeds and creepers grow so densely that it is hard to tell this was once a room. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi

From outside, it looks like a haunted house. Only the bones of Charani Jamidar Bari now remain. Weeds and creepers have overtaken the rest. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi

None of the rooms in the Charani Jamidar Bari are suitable for use. The roof has nearly caved in. The abandoned building and the abundant weeds lends an eerie, even ghostly, atmosphere to the site. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi

The image that comes to mind at the mention of the Puthia Rajbari is actually the Pachani Jamidar Bari. The Charani Jamidar Bari is nearby, but the structure is largely in ruins due to lack of maintenance. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi

The Charani Jamidar Bari is situated on the western bank of the Shyamsagar Dighi, or lake, at the west side of Pachani Rajbari in Rajshahi’s Puthia. Due to lack of preservation, the building has descended into near ruin. It is hard to tell that it was once the lavish home of a powerful local landlord. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi
