Police have recovered the body of Moni Kishore, a singer who found fame in the 90s, from his home in Dhaka’s Rampura.
The singer of popular songs like ‘Ki Chhile Amar Tumi’ lived alone at a house behind the Bangladesh Television building.
Moni’s body was recovered around 10pm on Sunday, said Ataur Rahman Akondo, chief of Rampura Police Station.
”Moni Kishore lived alone after his divorce from his wife. His daughter lives in America,” he said.
Although known professionally as Moni Kishore, his official name was Moni Mondal. Moni said in an interview that he added ‘Kishore’ to his name as a tribute to legendary singer Kishore Kumar, who he was a big fan of.
Police recovered the body after the landlord reported it to them, the OC said. “The landlord knocked on the door when he went to collect the monthly rent. There was no response for a long time. Then the landlord noticed a smell and called the police. After breaking in, police found the body on the bed.”
Police say they heard that Moni had not been seen outside for the past few days. They assume he died 4-5 days ago.
As there were no signs of injury on his body, the OC believes Moni may have died from an illness.
”Some medical reports, including a CT scan and MRI reports were found at his home.”
The body was sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death, Ataur said.
The singer released his last album a decade ago but has continued to perform on TV and radio. He also performed on stage irregularly.
Before joining the music industry, Moni was involved in the textile business and continued to be part of the business even after his music career took off.
He has recorded more than 500 songs, with some of his most popular being ‘Ki Chhile Amar Tumi,’ ‘Shei Duti Chokh Kothay Tomar,’ ‘Tumi Sudhu Amari Jonyo,’ ‘Mukhe Bolo Bhalobasho,’ and ‘Ami More Gele Jani Tumi’.
Moni composed more than 20 songs, with ‘Ki Chhile Amar Tumi’ being the most popular.
