The parliament has approved the Bogura University Bill 2026, paving the way for the establishment of a full-fledged university in Bogura.
Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon presented the bill in parliament on Tuesday, and it was passed by voice vote.
The new law repeals the Bogura Science and Technology University Act, 2001, under which no academic activities were ever launched.
Opposition members proposed referring the bill to a committee for public opinion and further scrutiny, but the proposals were rejected by voice vote after discussion on the bill's general principles.
In a statement outlining the purpose and reasons for the bill, the education minister said the 2001 law, although gazetted that year, was never implemented.
“The new university would offer education and research across a broad range of disciplines, including science, engineering, technology, arts, social sciences, business administration, law, agriculture and medicine, in line with the government's goal of developing skilled human resources,” he added.
During the debate, parliament members welcomed the move but raised concerns over the quality of education, research, teacher recruitment, and the university's administrative structure.
Brahmanbaria-2 MP Rumeen Farhana said, “There has been a rush to establish new universities since the change of government. Appointing political loyalists in these institutions will hamper the quality of education.
“Despite the growing number of universities, Bangladesh's performance in international rankings and research remains unsatisfactory,” she said.
