The Power Development Board on Friday said they started supplying power to the island on Thursday afternoon.

The authorities had been supplying power through only around 400 connections in the island on a limited scale using oil-run generators until now.

As part of developing power distribution system in Chattogram, a 15-kilometre cable has been set up under the sea from Sitakunda to Sandwip, according to PDB spokesman Saiful Hasan Chowdhury.

It took Tk 1.45 billion to complete the project in 22 months, Saiful said.

It is the reflection of the pledge Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina made during her Sandwip visit in 2012,” Sandwip Municipality Mayor Zafarullah Titu told bdnews24.com.
