Dhaka, May 11 (bdnews24.com) — Mashrafe Mortaza has been operated upon successfully for his knee problem.
One of the relatives of the renowned pacer, seeking anonymity, told bdnews24.com that at about 1.00pm on Wednesday, orthopedic surgeon Dr David Young completed the surgery in a Melbourne hospital.
The doctor has recommended staying in the hospital for two days.
After three-four weeks, Mashrafe will be able to leave Australia, says the doctor.
He left Dhaka in a Malaysia Airways flight, along with his father Golam Mortaza Swapon, on Friday night.
After assessing his knee ligament, Dr Young, who has been taking care of Mashrafe's injuries for some time now, ensured that the 'Narail Express' would be able to return to the field within four-five months.
It was the third operation on the right knee of someone who has battled numerous injuries throughout his career.
Dr Young had performed arthroscopic surgery on Mortaza's both knees in August 2009 when the right arm bowler injured his knee during the first Test match against the West Indies at St Vincent in July that year.
The latest injury occurred while taking a run for Abahani, his club, against BKSP, in a Dhaka Premier Division League match in December last year, shattering his World Cup dreams.
The 'Narail Express' made his return to international cricket through the three-match home series against Australia last month, but never seemed fully fit during the matches.
Mortaza is considered one of the fastest bowlers produced by Bangladesh, usually bowling in the mid-80s mph (about 130 km/h).
He regularly opens the bowling for Bangladesh and acts as a pinch-hitting lower-middle order batsman, with a first-class century and three international Test half-centuries to his name. But his career, to date, has been hampered by injuries.
