Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief Tamim Iqbal has said his biggest plan and investment revolve around the High Performance (HP) unit, a programme designed to prepare emerging cricketers for international cricket after Under-19 level.
The remarks came after Bangladesh whitewashed Pakistan for the second series in a row, climbing to seventh in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings and fifth in the World Test Championship standings -- the country's best-ever performance in Test cricket.
Asked about the team's performance, the head of the board’s ad hoc committee gave full credit to those on the ground. "I am sure the team management is doing well. I have no contribution here.”
“I do not give any input on the Bangladesh cricket team. I do not even think about it. The other responsibilities are more important to me,” Tamim said.
He said his focus remains on improving facilities for cricketers, ensuring systems operate properly and reshaping the HP structure.
“My work is to see how we can provide new facilities for the players, whether the other areas are moving in the right direction, fixing the processes and how we can rebuild the HP unit with proper planning.
“Those involved on the field deserve full credit for the performances -- the coaches, support staff, players, cricket operations manager, everyone. This success belongs to them.”
Talks of Tamim’s large-scale plans for the HP unit have been circulating for some time. He confirmed those discussions and explained why he believes reform is necessary.
“If you ask me what my biggest plan is, it is the HP unit. My biggest investment will also be in HP. If you ask where my focus is, my focus is mainly there.”
He said Bangladesh remain strong at Under-19 level but fail to bridge the gap before players reach the senior national side.
“Finding out why we are failing is very important. I think the HP structure needs a complete overhaul.”
While withholding specific logistical details of the revamp, the former captain hinted at potential adjustments to the age-limit structure within the squad to see if it yields better results.
He added that the chairman of game development would soon share fresh updates, including new features being integrated into the pipeline.
Mohammad Salahuddin has been brought in as head of HP. Tamim said a dedicated press conference would lay out the full plan once ready.
"It would not be right to say everything now since it is still on paper. Once it is fully prepared, I will let you know," he added.
