Bangladesh COVID cases jump by 11,434 in a day, highest in 24 weeks

Bangladesh has recorded 11,434 coronavirus cases in a daily count, the highest since Aug 9 last year, taking the overall tally of infections to 1,664,616.

The death toll from COVID-19 rose by 12 to 28,192 in the 24 hours to 8 am Friday, according to the latest government data.

Among the eight divisions, Dhaka tallied the highest number of cases and deaths, with 7,961 infections and six fatalities.

Another 752 people recovered from the illness nationwide, bringing the total number of recoveries to 1,555,797.

As many as 40,134 samples were tested across the country, for a positivity rate of about 28.5 percent.

The latest figures put the recovery rate at 93.45 percent and the mortality rate at 1.69 percent.

Globally, over 342.81 million people have been infected by the novel coronavirus and 5.57 million have died, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.
