Students from different colleges have started staging blockades at different points in Dhaka including Technical intersection, Tantibazar, and Mohakhali Amtoli intersection pressing for the immediate issuance of a final ordinance to establish the proposed Dhaka Central University.
Around 12pm on Wednesday, students of Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College and Kabi Nazrul Government College blocked the Tantibazar intersection. At the same time, students of Mirpur Government Bangla College blocked the Technical intersection.
At around 12:15pm, students of Government Titumir College brought out a procession and blocked the Amtoli intersection in Mohakhali. Around 1pm, students of Dhaka College and Eden College blocked the Science Laboratory intersection and staged a sit-in.
SH Rabiullah, a student of Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, told bdnews24.com: “We first gathered at Victoria Park. From there, we brought out a procession and blocked the Tantibazar intersection, demanding the issuance of an ordinance for Dhaka Central University.”
Md Jewel Rana, a student of Mirpur Government Bangla College, told bdnews24.com: “We brought out a procession from our college campus and blocked the Technical intersection. We want the ordinance to be issued by Thursday. Students of Titumir College are also joining us.”
Around 11:45am, students of Government Titumir College marched out from their campus. They went on to block the Amtoli intersection in Mohakhali around 12:15pm.
Dhaka College student Abu Bakar Siddique told bdnews24.com, “We are pressing for the issuance of the ordinance. Students of Dhaka College and Eden College have been gathering on the campus since the morning. We marched from the campus and blocked the Science Lab intersection.”
The blockades of these key roads during the busy afternoon hours disrupted traffic, causing congestion on surrounding roads, police officials said.
On Wednesday, students from seven colleges announced blockade programmes to be held at different points in Dhaka, calling for the upcoming Advisory Council meeting on Jan 15 to approve the updated draft of the Dhaka Central University ordinance and for the president to subsequently issue the final executive order.
A section of students previously held sit-in protests outside the Shikkha Bhaban on Dec 7 and 8 to push for the same cause.
They say that education ministry officials met and assured them that all necessary formalities would be completed by December, with the ordinance being issued in early January.

They demand that the Dhaka Central University Act, 2025 be approved at Thursday’s meeting of the government’s Advisory Council and that the final ordinance be issued on the same day.
The education ministry released the draft ordinance on Sept 24. It proposes dividing the seven colleges into four schools under an interdisciplinary or “schooling” framework. The colleges would continue offering higher secondary education under the proposal.
Plans are under way to form Dhaka Central University by combining Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Girl’s College, Mirpur Government Bangla College and Government Titumir College. However, teachers and sections of the colleges’ student bodies remain divided over how the new institution should be structured.
