Education cadre officials appointed to teaching positions are conducting a work stoppage at government colleges to protest the “attack on teachers” at Dhaka College.
They are also holding a sit-in demonstration while wearing black badges.
Principal Hafza Begum of Mohammadpur Government College said no classes are being held at the institution as the teachers are on strike.
She told bdnews24.com, "We are shocked by yesterday's horrific incident at Dhaka College. That is why we are observing a day-long strike."
No classes or exams were held at Eden Women's College due to the strike by education cadre officials. Classes were also suspended at Dhaka College.
Teachers at various government colleges across the country, including Mirpur Bangla College, Kishoreganj's Gurudayal Government College, Chattogram’s Government City College, Sherpur Government College, Joypurhat Government College, Kurigram's Ulipur Government College, Satkhira Government College, Satkhira Government Women's College, and others also held a work stoppage and sit-in programme with black badges.
Due to the protest, the National University has postponed Tuesday's degree and certificate course third-year examinations and all professional courses.
The BCS General Education Association had announced the work stoppage on Monday.
The organisation called for a sit-in programme at government colleges across the country over the alleged attack on teachers at Dhaka College.
On Monday, a scuffle broke out between teachers and students at Dhaka College. Education cadre officials have blamed the incident on students for an ordinance declaring the consolidation of seven government colleges in Dhaka into the proposed Dhaka Central University.
The students have claimed that teachers beat and injured two of their classmates.
