Tensions have escalated at Rajshahi University following a public spat between the university unit of Chhatra Dal and RUCSU General Secretary Salahuddin Ammar.
The exchange of statements began on Monday afternoon after Chhatra Dal took out a celebratory procession on campus to mark the impending return of BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman to the country.
At a rally following the march, Chhatra Dal’s Rajshahi University Senior Joint Vice-president Shakilur Rahman Sohag referred to a recent incident involving the alleged harassment of a teacher.
He said, “Rajshahi University Chhatra Dal can remove a ‘footage-seeker’ like Salahuddin Ammar from the campus within 30 minutes.”
The remark prompted an immediate response from Ammar, who reacted in a strongly worded Facebook post.
“I don’t want to see any expired, non-student anywhere near RUCSU,” he wrote. “There’s RUAA [Rajshahi University Alumni Association] for them, they have no business in RUCSU.”
He went on to issue a warning: “I am giving an ultimatum. If teachers, officers or staff who support Awami ‘fascism’ and Indian hegemony enter the campus, they will be tied up at Zoha Chattar.”
Referring to the backlash that followed, Ammar wrote that both Chhatra Dal and Chhatra League issued statements “in the same language”, adding that pro-BNP teachers had complained to the vice-chancellor that they were afraid to come to campus.

“I had cautioned the Chhatra League but BNP-aligned teachers are now afraid,” he wrote.
Using derogatory language for Chhatra Dal leaders, Ammar also wrote: “The Chhatra Dal convener once said he would throw the VC with his chair into the Padma River. Was that less serious than what I said? Where were the BNP ‘ideologues’ then?”
He continued: “One Chhatra Dal leader today said he would lock the campus in 30 minutes. Listen carefully, I will not remain on this campus like a stray dog or cat from 2007 to 2025. If I stay even one day, I will stay with purpose. Some people have spent 10-12 years on campus — think about what they actually achieved.”
Concluding the post, Ammar said: “Check whether I am carrying out my constitutional duties as RUCSU general secretary. We will work to uproot Awami ‘fascism’. If you have the courage, come on.”
When contacted on Monday night, Ammar told bdnews24.com: “They spoke about me in a certain context, and I responded in the same way in my post. I have nothing more to say on the matter.”
