The Jagannath University administration has announced a day of mourning over the death of student Jobayed Hossen. It has also suspended the Jagannath University Day programme scheduled for Tuesday.
Vice Chancellor Rezaul Karim said the day of mourning is being observed on campus on Monday, with the university flag at half-mast and everyone wearing black badges.
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the university authority on Monday.
Rezaul said, “Classes will be held by all departments on the 21st and 22nd of October, but examinations have been suspended.”
Jagannath University Day is on Oct 20, but the programme was pushed back to Tuesday in light of the Kali Puja holiday.
Jobayed, a student in the Department of Statistics at the university, was stabbed to death at a house in Dhaka’s Armanitola on Sunday. He used to tutor a student at the house.
Jobayed was a member of the convener committee of the university’s Chhatra Dal unit. He was also president of the Cumilla District Student Welfare Council.
