The newly elected vice president (VP) and general secretary (GS) of the Rajshahi University Central Students’ Union (RUCSU) have pledged to work with all students, including those who lost in the polls.
They made the remarks outside the university’s Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium shortly after the announcement of the election results on Friday.
VP-elect Mostakur Rahman Zahid from the Islami Chhatra Shibir panel urged all student representatives to work in line with the “students’ mandate”.
“Those who have won should celebrate the victory in accordance with their religious faith. Victory and defeat are part of elections. Together, we will build this campus.”
'NO ENEMIES ON CAMPUS'
GS-elect Salahuddin Ammar from the "Adhipatyabirodhi Oikya" (Anti-Dominance Unity) panel thanked students for their confidence in him.
“The students have elected me because they believe I can work for them. I am grateful to all the brothers and sisters who have long been part of our struggle and have spoken out for students’ rights.”
Describing the campus as a place devoid of hostility, Ammar said: “Everyone is our comrade. Together, we will build the campus of our dreams. We will work collectively to uphold students’ rights.”
Ammar, a well-known coordinator of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement at the university, dedicated his victory to those involved in the "anti-dominance" struggle.
“I dedicate this victory to the oppressed people of Palestine. I also dedicate it to my father, who endured imprisonment, and to my mother, who has always supported me and guided me through every struggle.”
The first RUCSU election in 35 years saw Islami Chhatra Shibir win 20 posts. Of the remaining three positions, only one went to the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal panel, with Nargis Khatun winning the sports secretary post.
Meanwhile, the post of science and technology secretary was won by independent candidate Tufail Ahmed Tufa, who serves as vice-president of the Rajshahi University Science Club.
